No special legislative session for bathroom discrimination!

On the evening of May 17, The Tennessean and The Commercial Appeal reported that legislators are considering a special legislative session to take up a new effort to pass a statewide anti-transgender bathroom discrimination law. Having a special session to discuss a bathroom bill is a waste of time and taxpayer money. Surly you have something better to do than to legislate what bathroom a person can use. And this has nothing to do with protecting women from sexual assault. Such a bill would do nothing to protect women any more than gun-free zones protect people from mass shooters.

Stop. Just stop. Not one incident to make this an issue, just a lot of “eww gross.” That’s not a reason for any law, much less a special session. Please don’t make it more embarrassing to live here than it already is.

Medical ethics require us to treat all patients equally. It should not be allowed to let one religion, or all religions to change the long standing tradition of medical ethics. This slippery slope will allow other religions to give their own version of ‘proper’ treatment according to their religious texts. This will open pandora’s box and change the entire landscape of medicine, religious separation, freedom, and government control of religion. Focus on the constitution, not what any (I mean any and all) religions claim is their right.

This is a slope we never want to start on.

Instead of a special legislative session to discriminate, how about a special session to help 300,000 Tennesseans with Insure Tennessee.
