No special legislative session for bathroom discrimination!

On the evening of May 17, The Tennessean and The Commercial Appeal reported that legislators are considering a special legislative session to take up a new effort to pass a statewide anti-transgender bathroom discrimination law.  Sign YOUR name to the statement below and we'll deliver your signatures to legislative leaders:

Dear Speaker Ramsey and Speaker Harwell:

We oppose a special legislative session to consider an anti-transgender bathroom discrimination law.  It is never justified to spend the state's time and money to advance discrimination.  Thank you for considering our views.

Stop pretending this is because you care about the children! This all started because a transgender child wanted access to a toilet where she wasn’t harassed by males. If you care, care about her rights too!

Transgender people are already at an increased risk for suicide, self-harm, and mental illness, and knowing that they do not have support from their state cannot help in their daily struggle. Transgender people are also at a higher risk for being abused, bullied, or even murdered. Please do not place them at a higher risk of harm. Diminishing their humanity by turning a significant minority of people into a talking point can only serve to do just that. Additionally, please consider the ways our taxpayer dollars are being used, and if calling a special session to deal with a non-threatening issue is a worthy expenditure. As a taxpayer and as one of your constituents, I would argue it is not.

Please consider our views as you move towards a decision.

Just stop!!! This is not the best use of our time; because your time is our time. You were not elected to legislate your religious agenda. Tennessee has diverse residents and our communities should be all inclusive. We will lose support for business development and conventions, but that is not the most important part. We will lose the special people that have chosen Tennessee as their home and that are tax payers and constituents too!

We’ve managed bathroom time very well over the years. I think any legislation regarding this is a waste of time. Do we not want governtment out of as many things as possible?
