Stop using religion to discriminate in Tennessee

stopusingreligion.JPG

On April 18, 2016 about 30 pastors shamefully stood in Legislative Plaza and spoke in favor of the anti-transgender student bathroom bill.  And religion was used to advance the counseling discrimination bill.  Many more clergy across Tennessee publicly opposed both bills.

Whether you're religious or not, aren't you tired of religion being used to support discrimination in our laws?  If so, endorse this statement:

We oppose the use of religion to justify discrimination in Tennessee law.  To use religion to divide us in our public life violates the spirit of the U.S. and Tennessee Constitutions, does harm to the people of Tennessee, and brings scandal to religion.

Using Religion to deny rights to others is hypocritical. Treat others as you would want them to treat you.

Some people don’t read the entire bible!

It is ludicrous that “religion” still has a voice in state matters in the XXIst. century. Don’t self-styled “Christians” remember that Jesus clearly stated “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s”, or they just quote scripture when it accommodates their skewed views?

The clergy should keep their opinions to themselves, instead of spewing hatred and ignorance in matters alien to them.

As a future resident whom has many family ties to the great state of Tennessee, I wholeheartedly endorse this message. God wants us to love one another without judgement. Do unto others as you would have done to you. The bible clearly states that it is up to God and God alone to pass judgement upon man. Y’all are using your religions to divide, spread judgement, and hate upon those for being true to themselves. For living truely the way that God made them. Let us not forget whom is the great creator. Who it is that made each and every one of us.

Who are we to discriminate against a fellow creation of God?

I am an Episcopalian. I attend church regularly and work for a variety of church committees associated with social justice issues. I do this because I believe that God requires us to love our neighbors and to work for justice. That said, I do not believe that religion should in any way determine secular practice and law. I am particularly offended when some people hide behind their religious beliefs to perpetuate bigotry and ignorance (as is currently happening with anti-LGBT legislation).
