No special legislative session for bathroom discrimination!

On the evening of May 17, The Tennessean and The Commercial Appeal reported that legislators are considering a special legislative session to take up a new effort to pass a statewide anti-transgender bathroom discrimination law.  Sign YOUR name to the statement below and we'll deliver your signatures to legislative leaders:

Dear Speaker Ramsey and Speaker Harwell:

We oppose a special legislative session to consider an anti-transgender bathroom discrimination law.  It is never justified to spend the state's time and money to advance discrimination.  Thank you for considering our views.

Please put a stop to these very costly and entirely fabricated special interest attacks against our most vulnerable citizens. We don’t need ridiculous solutions for imaginary problems that do not exist, and we all deserve far better representation from our state legislators than this.

Aren’t there more important matters for our legislators to be working on? This legislation subjects people who are already being bullied to further undue scrutiny and hardship. How would you feel if Your Child was told, Oh, you can’t use that restroom… We thought that sort of discrimination was dead in the South… Please, do not follow the destructive path of North Carolina. Our Honorable Governor said he wanted the image of Tennessee to be “welcoming.”

Our state is on the verge of becoming the new Silicon Valley. (Lots of tech industries are eyeing us at this very moment.) These companies employ hundreds of LGBT people and would certainly locate elsewhere if such laws were passed. Many jobs (not to mention Federal Funds) would go out the window! Please, have the guts to stand up against these right wing extremists who are pushing their hate-filled agendas. They don’t care about our state’s economic well being, only their personal warped ideas.

How about let’s all get along and be the Volunteer State, the state where neighbor supported neighbor through the 2010 Flood regardless of race, creed, national origin or Gender Identity. It didn’t matter then, and it shouldn’t matter now. We are All in this together. People of differing gender identities just want to be able to use the facilities, wash their hands and leave, just like the rest of us. It’s that youth pastor or ball coach you’d better be watching out for around your children. The statistics speak for themselves. Thank you.

Legislating discrimination is both harmful and, in the fullness of time, a blight on our State we would have to live with historically. Let’s not be a part of this.

You have much more meaningful and important things to fix in Tennessee that enhance, rather than restrict, citizens’ rights. Forcryingoutloud
