VETO Hate Bill 1840, the Counseling Discrimination bill

Please, add your voice and urge Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam to veto this discriminatory bill.

Dear Governor Haslam,

We urge you to veto HB1840, which allows counselors to turn away clients based on the counselor's biases and values.  This bill puts the focus on the desires of counselors rather than on the needs of clients, damaging the counseling profession and putting clients at risk.

An anti-bullying amendment was stripped from the bill in the House Health Committee leaving youth vulnerable in areas where mental health services are not widely available.

Thank you for considering our views.

The American Psychological Association has come out against this stance because of the grave harm it can cause. Clients may only realize or confess their sexual orientations mid-treatment and the damage caused by being turned away can prevent clients who need support from ever seeking treatment again. Therapists need to be trained to be competent to see all clients. Those who cannot do this should select a profession in which they do not attempt to provide support for vulnerable clients. Therapists who reject clients because of their sexual orientations or genders reenact the types of social violence that have caused clients’ challenges and stressors in the first place.

For 12 years I lived and worked in Tennessee and still regularly work on mental health projects in the Memphis metro area. My work is as a psychologist who prepares counselors and psychologists to work with mental health concerns. This bill directly contradicts the ethical principles of our field to do not harm and to act with beneficence—therapists and counselors should be training and prepared to work with all clients, regardless of differences in values or cultural background.

It’s embarrassing that this petition has to be circulated. Actually it’s disgraceful. Homophobic people, go into a new profession that doesn’t include descriptors like care and helper. The field needs less people like you.

This bill is in direct opposition to all therapists’ code of ethics. It also does not protect religious freedom. Instead, it gives people a way to discriminate against minority groups. And in this particular case the discrimination comes from a very poor, maybe unfounded, interpretation of a religious text.
