VETO Hate Bill 1840, the Counseling Discrimination bill

Please, add your voice and urge Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam to veto this discriminatory bill.

Dear Governor Haslam,

We urge you to veto HB1840, which allows counselors to turn away clients based on the counselor's biases and values.  This bill puts the focus on the desires of counselors rather than on the needs of clients, damaging the counseling profession and putting clients at risk.

An anti-bullying amendment was stripped from the bill in the House Health Committee leaving youth vulnerable in areas where mental health services are not widely available.

Thank you for considering our views.

I have been involved in the training of counselors and psychologists in TN for 25 years. This bill has huge potential for harming the residents of TN, especially those who are most vulnerable as they seek mental health counseling. It is also stands in direct opposition to the professional ethics of the American Counseling Association and American Psychological Association. I urge you to attend to the stances of these professional organizations that have training and experience in providing mental health treatment rather than to groups that support a position that privileges the counselor’s desires over the client’s needs.

I teach a mental health ethics course— this bill violates ethics in the most fundamental way.

I was born and raised in Tennessee, and I worked there for years as a mental health professional. This bill is very concerning, and contradicts our ethical codes. It marginalizes many of the people who need services, and it promotes discrimination, intolerance, and hate.

    Dear Governor Haslam,

    Please veto this bill.

If therapists and counselors could turn away patients based on “sincerely held beliefs"

(presuming that this is based in conservative Christian ‘beliefs’),

then, (and borrowing from the Ten Commandments),

could they also turn away patients who are atheists?

Who curse? Who work on Sunday?

    Who hate their parents?

Who have killed (military or felon)?

Who have cheated on their spouse?

    Who have stolen, lied, coveted???

    PLEASE VETO THIS BILL.

I feel compelled to speak out against a bill that is irrefutably contrary to my profession of counseling. I don’t turn away those who lie or steal, despite those things being against my religion. This isn’t a bill about religious freedom. It’s a bill of discrimination.
