VETO Hate Bill 1840, the Counseling Discrimination bill

Please, add your voice and urge Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam to veto this discriminatory bill.

Dear Governor Haslam,

We urge you to veto HB1840, which allows counselors to turn away clients based on the counselor's biases and values.  This bill puts the focus on the desires of counselors rather than on the needs of clients, damaging the counseling profession and putting clients at risk.

An anti-bullying amendment was stripped from the bill in the House Health Committee leaving youth vulnerable in areas where mental health services are not widely available.

Thank you for considering our views.

You’ll do your state and its economy a great favor in the long run if you’ll find the courage to veto this hateful, bigotry-driven bill.

Counselors are professionals who should be able to serve all, regardless of personal beliefs. When a person is asking for help it should be granted without judgement. Our mental health system is already inadequate, please don’t exacerbate the problem by signing this bill in to law.

I’m not a resident of Tennessee, but I’m a tourist and there’s a whole lot of other places I can choose to visit where the people don’t live in hatred.

Please veto this discriminatory bill. Consider the consequences of this measure on the ethical behavior of counselors and the impact that may have on clients. Also consider that this provides non-Christian counselors the right to discriminate against Christian clients. There is a reason why there is a separation of church and state, which is ignored by the Christian right, who assume that they will for ever be in the majority and have power. Only when these harmful bills impact them will they recognize that discrimination in the name of religious freedom is not just.

Governor Haslam, as a health professional, and as a church member, I implore you to veto Hate Bill 1840. It is brutal, unconstitutional, and marks this state as backward and unfriendly to new residents, businesses, or any thoughtful person considering Tennessee.

The only purpose of this bill is discrimination. That isn’t Christian.
