Urge Senators Alexander and Corker to speak up for LGBTQ people when the next Supreme Court justice is appointed

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy is retiring so the President will name a successor who must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.  Sign to urge Senator Alexander and Senator Corker to speak up for the LGBTQ community during the confirmation process.  TEP will deliver a hard copy of the signatures to their offices.

Senator Alexander and Senator Corker:

When the President announces his choice to replace Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, we urge you to speak up for the rights of LGBTQ people.  It is vitally important that members of the Supreme Court support the principle of "equal protection" and that Justice Kennedy's successor uphold the existing rights of LGBTQ people and oppose discrimination against LGBTQ people.  We respectfully ask you to raise these concerns publicly and not to vote for any nominee who supports discrimination.

The United States is a nation that prides itself on lofty ideals, one of which is equality. We teach our schoolchildren to cheerfully chirp that we offer “liberty and justice for all,” keyword, all, with their little hands over their hearts, facing the flag. Now, I needn’t remind you that our nation has been far from perfect in keeping that promise. However, you hold the key to improving that situation when it comes time to confirm Justice Kennedy’s replacement by choosing someone who will rule in favor of protecting the rights of LGBTQ Americans.

The LGBTQ community is a brave, talented and helpful one deserving of equal respect under the law. In that they wish to marry, participate in the armed forces and have prosperous careers, their desires are, when you stop and think about it, rather conservative. They demand nothing less than to take on the same responsibilities as their fellow Americans with privileged sexuality and gender identities. Is it truly so unreasonable that they demand to be free to live mature, responsible, productive lives free of harassment? No, it isn’t. You’d want the same. Why deny it of someone else? LGBTQ Americans have inherent worth and dignity just like we do. We need a new Supreme Court justice who can see that and protect their rights accordingly.

I will leave you with this thought. As other allied nations begin to embrace their LGBTQ citizenry, we do not need to broadcast to the rest of the world that the U.S. has chosen to pride itself on cruelty and bigotry. In the long run, it may leave us isolated on the world stage. The current Republican presidential administration has already done enough to broadcast such a foul message and weaken ties of mutual respect and cooperation with our allies in Latin America, Europe and Asia. We don’t need to give them any more reasons to leave us behind. We will be a weaker country for being a lonely one.

Please guide Congress into confirming a Supreme Court justice who will rule in favor of what is best for all Americans, not just a select few of them. Please insist on a pro-LGBTQ candidate. Thank you.
