Stop using religion to discriminate in Tennessee

stopusingreligion.JPG

On April 18, 2016 about 30 pastors shamefully stood in Legislative Plaza and spoke in favor of the anti-transgender student bathroom bill.  And religion was used to advance the counseling discrimination bill.  Many more clergy across Tennessee publicly opposed both bills.

Whether you're religious or not, aren't you tired of religion being used to support discrimination in our laws?  If so, endorse this statement:

We oppose the use of religion to justify discrimination in Tennessee law.  To use religion to divide us in our public life violates the spirit of the U.S. and Tennessee Constitutions, does harm to the people of Tennessee, and brings scandal to religion.

The Tennessee Governor spoke on NPR today and defended the legislation currently on his desk. He said Lawyers pick and choose who they want to provide services to, so why can’t Counselors. This is flawed logic because the state of Tennessee has not passed a law to say Lawyers can arbitrarily deny client services based upon their “firmly held religious beliefs”. This current Tennessee law would allow Counselors to violate their code of professional conduct, which is unconscionable.

Religion and the state are separate entities and ought to be respected as such; any attempt to legislate religion only diminishes both of them.

This Christian treats everyone the way I wish to be treated, with love and kindness, not hate.

It is wrong to be elected for your religious beliefs to create legislation to support your own agenda!
