Stop using religion to discriminate in Tennessee

stopusingreligion.JPG

On April 18, 2016 about 30 pastors shamefully stood in Legislative Plaza and spoke in favor of the anti-transgender student bathroom bill.  And religion was used to advance the counseling discrimination bill.  Many more clergy across Tennessee publicly opposed both bills.

Whether you're religious or not, aren't you tired of religion being used to support discrimination in our laws?  If so, endorse this statement:

We oppose the use of religion to justify discrimination in Tennessee law.  To use religion to divide us in our public life violates the spirit of the U.S. and Tennessee Constitutions, does harm to the people of Tennessee, and brings scandal to religion.

Separation of church and state is essential in ensuring that each person is allowed to maintain their own personal beliefs and dignity. No one religion is “right” or “wrong,” and everyone deserves to be able to choose whichever one suits them best.

I encourage those who are inclined to legislate their own fears and uncomfortableness with differences among people to spend time getting to know – and I mean truly getting to know on a one on one basis – at least 5 people who fall into the category they fear.

How can a state with so many good people stand by and let this dangerous discrimination take root? Does it sound at all familiar? All it took then was silent compliance. let’s not let that happen again.

I am so sad that religion is being used in hate-mongering when the South that I love is so full of Loving and Caring People.

It’s a sad day when clergy misuse the heart of Jesus Christ to descriminate against their fellow human. “He who is without sin, let him cast the first stone…” Reference to search your own heart before judging someone else. Unfortunately, many in this general assembly used ego & pride to legislate basic human rights. That backed by the misuse of God’s Word is a dangerous combination. My higher power states for us to love God & love his people. Unfortunately clergy & the like, turned a sacred loving, spiritual written word into a weapon of descrimination. That’s not what God intended. I’m very sad that the majority of this legislative body became so absorbed in its power hungry ego when making choices & wanting to be seen & right, instead of humbling their hearts to even consider the voice of reason. All voices deserve to be heard. Not just a select few radicals who insist on bullying & being right. Not God’s way, no way!
