Stop using religion to discriminate in Tennessee

stopusingreligion.JPG

On April 18, 2016 about 30 pastors shamefully stood in Legislative Plaza and spoke in favor of the anti-transgender student bathroom bill.  And religion was used to advance the counseling discrimination bill.  Many more clergy across Tennessee publicly opposed both bills.

Whether you're religious or not, aren't you tired of religion being used to support discrimination in our laws?  If so, endorse this statement:

We oppose the use of religion to justify discrimination in Tennessee law.  To use religion to divide us in our public life violates the spirit of the U.S. and Tennessee Constitutions, does harm to the people of Tennessee, and brings scandal to religion.

The purpose of religion is to provide personal, individual guidance and to enhance a personal relationship with God, not to use as a tool of hate and discrimination against others. If one believes the book of any religion is to be used to promote hate and segregation against certain members of society, one clearly needs to read it again, the point has been missed!

The legislature needs to stop focusing on their religious beliefs and start serving the very diverse population that they represent. It’s time to stop letting the beliefs of the majority override the rights of the minority. It would be helpful if the legislature would stop trying to pass legislation that violates the establishment clause of our state constitution.

Using religion as a tool to discriminate shows that those who claim it’s in the spirit of God, or the teaching of Jesus, either don’t know anything about Jesus, or they are just liars . Anyone who has even a rudimentary knowledge of the teaching of Jesus knows that being judgemental is the FIRST lesson Jesus teaches us that is wrong. I also want to say that this country was based on a separation of church & state, & the majority of the Founding Fathers, had a very low opinion of religion. The real reason for these discriminatory Bills is to support the homophobic conservative bigots that think they have more rights that everyone else. I have lived in TN my whole life & I vote as does my husband, in every election from dogcatcher to President, & I will not only vote against elected officials who vote to infringe on the rights of ALL Tennesseans, I will also do all I can to shire a bright light on this kind of discrimination, & actively fight to vote out any lawmakers who do not fight for equal rights for all Tennesseans.

Nothing upsets me more than when people use religion, especially the bible, to discriminate against people and their way of life. There is nothing lower and more pathetic than that, in my opinion.

I encourage all members of the clergy to make this endorsement. Let’s step up to support a world that works for everyone.
