A counselor agrees to act in accordance with professional ethical standards. These don’t include refusing to treat clients because of the client’s sexual orientation or identity. The professional person acting as a professional is supposed to be interested in the well-being of the client, not the particular personal or religious “deeply held beliefs” the counselor may hold. If a counselor is incapable of separating personal prejudice from professional conduct, a law is not the answer. The answer is a change of jobs where personal religious positions will not interfere. Like garbage collector, or dishwasher, or roofing repair technician.

This potential legislation threatens the mental health and physical health of patients, and credibility of counselors. Please veto HB1840 and sent this malformed screed to the trash bin it deserves.

As a clinical psychology student, I wonder how someone would even get into mental health unless they accept all people as clients. Politicians, get out of counseling, you cannot even do politics!

Licensed psychologists (and I assume all others) are ethically and, therefore, legally bound to refer patients to other professionals when their personal biases or other limitations would interfere with optimally effective treatment. Not only does this proposal seek to institutionalize discrimination, but one must ask where is the line to be drawn for suffering help-seekers when, say, they need a cardiologist? One must ask here, “Who would Christ turn away?”

It is simply unconscionable that our legislature believes they have the right to deny medical care to those in need, whoever they might be and for whatever reason. Please veto HB 1840 and send our state legislators to counseling….the DESPERATELY need their brains rewired!
